ArtsEmerson - The World On Stage - Presents A Festival of Polish Films
ArtsEmerson is currently presenting a Festival of Polish Films through November 15. I just came from the filming of the stunningly beautiful and thought-provoking 2013 film, "In The Name Of" by Malgorzata Szumowska – Film Director.
The film stars the talented Andrzej Chyra as a priest who wrestles with keeping his vows. The story is one that addresses the issue of sexual abuse within the church, yet is at a deeper level an examination of loneliness. Mr. Chyra was in attendance at this afternoon's screening and hosted a lively post-show discussion of the film's themes and techniques.
The film is a gorgeous work of art. The cinematography of Michaal Englert toggles between close-ups of pairs of people trying to connect with each other and sweeping panoramas of the Polish countryside. A stirring musical score provides a moving accompaniment to the imagery unfolding on the screen.
